The Invasion of the Fruit Flies!

It’s October – and I’m in Minnesota.

The outdoor daytime high temperature is around 40-degrees.

The overnight low temperature is around 29-degrees.

Do the fruit flies in our house NOT know this?!?!?!

I’m not sure what happened.

Sure, we bought a bunch of bananas at the grocery store and they sat in a vintage bowl for the past week.

Yes, we’ve eaten most of the bananas, with only two remaining in that bowl.

Yet, somehow we have fruit flies flying around our kitchen as if they are multiplying by the minute.

Those buggers are hard to squish! You see them fly in front of your face as you stare at the computer screen, but when you go to slap your hands together to squish them into oblivion, they somehow escape, and then fly around your head as if in defiance.

How does that happen? Especially when it’s COLD here in Minnesota!?!?!

I realize I’m not as quick as David Carradine as the Grasshopper in that vintage Kung Fu show from the ’70s, but good grief! One should be able to reach out and catch one of these buggers!

We had company today and we were gathered around our center island talking. The fruit flies made their presence known, and I have to say it was rather embarrassing to have these things flying about our heads.

I’ve ditched the remaining bananas.

I’ve swabbed out and sterilized the vintage bowl that holds our fruit.

I’ve made sure all other fruit is in the refrigerator, chilling.

And yet…. the fruit flies are STILL here! And they seem to be multiplying!

As I’ve been typing, they’ve been flying around my head and around the glass of wine I have sitting on my desk. Ah! So they like a White Zinfandel, too. I’ve had to cover my glass with a napkin to keep them OUT OF MY WINE! Ugh! Wait! I think I might have just swallowed one! Good grief!

How on Earth do you get rid of fruit flies? I need to Google that. Wait one minute…

…okay, I’m back. Turns out, fruit flies are naturally more prevalent this time of year – who knew?!  Interesting article on these little buggers is here – Fruit Flies Invade This Time of Year and here – 7 Genius Ways to Kill Fruit Flies (See! I KNEW they liked wine!)

I’ll have to consider some of the methods they mention to get rid of these flying pests. In the meantime, I’ll be sipping my wine under a napkin, despite the crazy looks from my family.

If you have more tips on getting rid of these pests, I’m all ears!

Cheers!

  1. I can tell you that if you use a fly swatter as one option to rid yourself of these pests that you should cover both sides of the swatter with clear packing tape. Otherwise, you’ll look rather hopeless and in quite poor form swatting at thin air as the fruit flies just fly away. They are so small that they go through the holes in the fly swatter.
