Liven Up Your Room Decor With This Quick-Change Pillow Tip

Want to make a quick change to your room decor without spending an arm and a leg? Here’s a quick tip!

Instead of purchasing all new throw pillows for your couch, loveseat, or bed, just order new covers to put over the pillows you already own.

Pillow covers can be a lot less expensive than new pillows, and there are so many choices to choose from!

Changing out your pillow covers is also a way to decorate for the seasons or for the holidays. When the season or holiday is over, just add a different pillow cover.

This set of pillow covers is awesome! I love the leather-like fabric and the white linen. They have a mid century modern or boho look. I use these pillow covers on the pillows on our bed. They are made very well and include a hidden zipper.

This is another set I have on our bed. The fabric is a very nice quality fabric. I love that the zippers are hidden.

The simple black and white colors work with any decor and the geometric patterns add an element of interest to the room. I think the patterns are timeless.

These pillows would look really cool on a bench in an entry way, or even outside on a covered patio or screen porch.

Here’s a pillow cover that makes me smile. I have this pillow cover on our bed. It’s a print from a vintage Fornasetti illustration.

I love the look on her face, and that she’s wearing scuba gear. I love being in the water – either in a pool or in a lake. This pillow cover represents my personality so well, plus I love the black and white illustration.

Pillow Cover Storage Tips

When you’re ready to change out your pillow covers, you’ll need a way to store your existing pillow covers until the next time you want to use them. Here are a few tips I recommend.

  • Store your pillow covers in a zip top plastic bag. Just fold the pillow cover neatly into quarters and slip into a zip top bag. Remove as much air from the bag as possible so the pillow covers can store flat.
  • Use a permanent marker to write a description of the pillow cover on the plastic bag. For example, “18” Floral Cover / Spring Decor”.
  • Store all your bagged pillow covers in a clear storage bin (like this shoe box size bin by IRIS – one of my most favorite bins that I’ve used for 15 years now). Put a label on the bin and store it in your laundry room or linen closet.
  • If you don’t have too many pillow covers, you can always store them right on the pillows! Just put the cover on the outside layer that you want to display. When you’re ready for a change, zip off that cover to reveal the covers beneath it. Layer the covers in the order you want to use them, with the outermost layer being the current display layer.

Additional Tips

Here are a few additional tips regarding pillow covers.

  • When looking for pillow covers, make sure to buy a cover that is slightly smaller than your pillow form. For example, an 18″ pillow cover looks best over a 20″ pillow.
  • Don’t want to invest in pillow covers? Use a scrap piece of fabric (I love using vintage fabrics) to cover your pillow – without sewing. Just cut the fabric into a large square (twice the size of your pillow). Lay your pillow form onto the fabric so the pillow corners point to the straight edges of the fabric. Pull up the corners of the fabric over the pillow and tie into place. Just like that you have a no-sew pillow cover!
  • What? You don’t already have throw pillows for your decor? Here is a set of four 20″ pillow forms that are perfect for getting started. These forms are high quality and are very fluffly – perfect for a couch or bed.
  • Buy clearance pillows just for their forms! Seriously. If you see clearance throw pillows for prices you can’t find elsewhere, but the cover is just not your style – buy them anyway! The pillow forms can be recovered with pillow covers that you do like, and often the clearance pillows are much less expensive than buying pillow forms. I bought a bunch of 18″ pillows on year-end clearance for $3 each. I did NOT like the look of the pillows, but I just removed the cover and replaced it with covers I like. Easy peasy and so inexpensive.
  • You can find pillow covers at a lot of home decor stores. Two of my favorite sources for pillow covers is Amazon and Etsy. Just click these links and you’ll find lots of cool patterns, colors, and styles to choose from.
