My First Stitch Fix Box (A Review) – And a $100 Referral Code For You To Try

With the change of seasons I decided it might be fun to do something different and add a few changes to my wardrobe. I decided to give Stich Fix a try and see what a stylist would come up with for me.

If you’re not familiar with Stitch Fix, it’s not a subscription box. Instead, a stylist sends you clothing pieces based on your style profile (see more information below). When you receive a package, you can choose to purchase any or all the items in the shipment, and send back what you don’t want. You’re charged a $20 styling fee before you get your package, but this fee goes toward the purchase price of the piece(s) you choose to keep. You only pay for the items you keep, and there is no charge to ship the other items back.

Getting Started with Stitch Fix

Listed below are the steps to get started with Stitch Fix.

The first thing you must do is create an account and a style profile. This includes giving information such as your age, height, weight, sizes, and things you’re most interested in finding for your wardrobe. You can even specify a price range for your budget. You then take a Style Quiz to help pinpoint the things you like and don’t like. This gives your stylist more information to tailor selections exactly for you. You can also complete a tool called a Style Shuffle to further define what you like and don’t like.

Here are some of the choices I had in my Style Shuffle:

Once your profile is created, and you’ve made selections in the Style Shuffle, you can provide additional information regarding the types of clothing and accessories you’d like to receive, as well as ideas for colors, patterns, and prints that you like (or don’t like). The more information you give, the easier it is for a stylist to find just the things you might like.

Once you’ve finished your style profile, you choose when you want to receive your Stitch Fix, and how often. Your package arrives when you specify, and you can try on all the items your stylist selected for you. If you purchase the entire shipment, you receive a 25% discount on the purchase price of the items. If you choose to send one or more things back, you use the prepaid envelope and are not charged.

Each purchase you make helps your stylist determine new items for you for your next shipment.

As part of the profile process, you can also upload inspiration photos to a Pinterest-like board within your Stitch Fix profile account, and you can also link to a clothing inspiration board directly on Pinterest, if you have one.

Contents of My First Stitch Fix Box

The items I received in my first Stitch Fix box are shown below. In addition to the clothing, I also received a price list for the items in my box, a welcome note, and a sheet with styling suggestions for the pieces.

As part of my profile choices, I requested casual, comfortable pieces. Items comfortable to wear around the house, as well as while out and about running errands. I mentioned I was looking for jeans, leggings, tops, and sweaters. My profile mentioned that I don’t really like floral prints, purples, blues, reds, or maroons. With that in mind, I was actually surprised to see the choices I received: a navy blue sweater; a maroon, black, white, and pink blouse; a floral print red, blue, and pink blouse; a floral print blue, pink, yellow blouse; and a floral print green and black blouse. The stylist wrote a note saying she hadn’t found any jeans or leggings for this box, so had included only tops. Hmmm… I like trying new things – which is why I tried this box in the first place – but none of the items I received are really my style, colors, or patterns. In fact, they are almost the opposite of what I typically like… give me a pair of capris, a comfortable t-shirt, and a hoodie or jean jacket and I’m good to go.

did however try all of these things on and kept an open mind.

Read on to find out which piece(s) I’m keeping, and which ones are going back.

Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan

While I don’t own any piece of clothing in navy blue, or a sweater like this one, it really isn’t too bad. It’s a comfortable sweater and has a nice sliming effect. I can picture wearing this with a pair of faded boyfriend jeans and a white t-shirt. I’m keeping this one and going to give it a try.

Price to keep: $38

Styling suggestions:

Caleena 3/4 Sleeve Pleated Crochet Detail Knit Top

The colors and the print on this shirt is completely not me, but I really like the style, cut, and fit of this shirt. The fabric is really nice as well. Overall, I do like this choice. My husband liked it, too! I would have kept this piece, but for the price, it really needed to be a print and color I loved, rather than could live with. Sadly, I’m sending this piece back.

Price to keep: $64.00

Styling suggestions:

Wilcox Tie Neck Blouse

This blouse has a black tank top that you wear underneath. The fabric is very sheer. Again, I really like the cut, style, and fit of this blouse, but the floral print is an absolute no for me. I also do not like the colors – at all. This one is definitely going back. And of course, this is one my husband liked the most. Sorry dear.

Price to keep: $68.00

Styling suggestions:

Bobby Embroidered Tie Detail Top

I like the boho look of this shirt, even though I own nothing remotely like it. It’s comfortable and fit well. But, the floral print and blue, pink, white, yellow, purple colors are just not me. I might get used to this shirt if I were to give it a chance, but at the price, I know I could find something similar in a solid color that I like better. Therefore, this one has to go back, too. Bummer.

Price to keep: $44.00

Styling suggestions:

Karie Split Neck Blouse

I’ll just get right to the point – there is nothing I like about this piece. I don’t like the style, cut, or fit. The fabric is very uncomfortable. I very much dislike the floral print, and the emerald green is too dark and dreary for me. I didn’t have to think twice about this piece – it’s definitely a return.

Price to keep: $58.00

Styling suggestions:

Will I Do This Again?

So, will I try another Stitch Fix box? Yes! As a matter of fact, my next box will be here on November 27th and I’m really looking forward to it!

Even though I only chose one item to keep from my first box, I am hopeful that the second box will have things more my style. I guess we will wait and see.

What I Liked:

  • The size of each piece fit me very well.
  • It was fun trying on things I would never have selected for myself.
  • I enjoyed trying on the different pieces in my own home, and being able to model them for my husband and our sons to get their opinions.  That’s something that would NEVER happen if I were to go out and shop for clothes in a brick and mortar store! And I really liked that my husband actually liked all of the pieces.

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Florals! As I mentioned, I was really surprised to have received so many floral choices, especially when I made a special note in my profile about how I didn’t like florals.
  • The color choices were not something I would choose for myself. While I am open to trying new colors and patterns, these pieces were in some of my least favorite colors.

Tips to Make Your First Stitch Fix Box a Good One

To help make your first Stitch Fix a good fit for you and your style, here are some tips I recommend.

  • Complete your style profile – Make sure to complete your style profile and be thorough with your choices and your notes. If you don’t like a particular type of clothing, make sure to include that information. Make this profile as complete as possible! In the section that asks your preferences for body parts (what you want to show off and what you want to keep covered), be specific.
  • Leave detailed style notes – There is an area in your profile where you can leave detailed notes for your stylist. Be specific! Let them know things you really love, as well as things you really dislike. You can also let them now ideas for specific outfits you’re looking for, for an upcoming occasion.
  • Use the Style Shuffle tool – This tool allows you to give a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to various items and styles. It takes about 2-minutes to complete, and is something you can do more than once. The things you choose in the Style Shuffle really help your stylist find things just for you.
  • Add ideas to your Inspiration Board – Make sure to add photos of things you like to your Inspiration Board within your Stitch Fix profile. These photos can be of clothing from your favorite online stores, photos of friends wearing clothes you like, as well as photos and ideas from Pinterest. As a matter of fact, you can also create a Clothing Inspiration Board in Pinterest if you’d like, and then give your stylist a link to that board. You can add to your Inspiration Board whenever you’d like, and you can also see additional inspirational photos from a separate tab in that area, and then add things from that board to your own Inspiration Board.
