I’ve been a huge fan of Dean Koontz novels since I read his first book back in the late 70s. I have every one of his books in my library, and I’ve read them all. I like the books by Dean Koontz because they are techno-thrillers. The stories in his books make you think “could something like this really happen?“.
I just finished reading “The Whispering Room“, the second book in the Jane Hawk series. Before I give my impression, here’s the text on the back cover:
“A mild-mannered schoolteacher takes her own life, and many others, in a shocking act of carnage. When her disturbing secret journal is discovered, it seems certain that she must have been insane. But Jane Hawk knows better.
In the wake of her husband’s inexplicable suicide – and scores of equally mysterious deaths – Jane picks up the trail of a secret cabal of powerful players bent on hijacking America’s future by terrifying means, for monstrous ends. But they never banked on a highly trained FBI agent gone rogue who’s determined to take them down, even as she becomes the nation’s most wanted fugitive.
Driven by love for her lost husband – and fear for their five-year-old son – Jane Hawk has become an unstoppable predator. Her prey will have nowhere to run when her shadow falls across them.”
If you like books that you find hard to put down, and can’t wait to turn the page to see what’s going to happen next – this book is for you.
This book was just as good as the first book in this series, “The Silent Corner“. It continues where the first book left off, and what a wild adventure it is! The story is filled with intrigue, edge of the seat excitement and a range of emotions. There is always something happening in this story, which makes it really hard to put down! You tell yourself you only have one hour to read, but at the end of that hour, you’re in a “good part” and don’t want to stop! I literally found myself having to set a timer to limit my reading on certain days! If not for the timer, I probably would have read the entire book in one sitting, and wouldn’t have gotten anything else done. THAT’S how good this book is!
Dean Koontz has created an amazing character with Jane Hawk. She is one tough-cookie and I love her background and what she is fighting for. She is a character that you can relate to, and you cheer her on.
I don’t want to give you any spoilers, but I will say the only thing I didn’t like about this book was the way it ended. The first book ended in a way that you felt the story could be over at that point. Sure, you wanted it to continue, but the way it ended made it seem like a complete story. That’s not the case with this second book. The ending was good, don’t get me wrong, but the way it ended left you wondering what’s next. It just seems like it ended too quickly. Yes, I know… there is a third book in this series “The Crooked Staircase“, and that book is out right now in hardcover. So yes, I could go get that book and continue reading. And trust me, I have been tempted! However, I really prefer paperback books to hardcover – they just work much better for poolside reading. So unfortunately I now have to wait for the third book to be published in paperback. That’s going to be a long wait! I really am looking forward to reading that book to see how this story continues.
I highly recommend this book, as well as the first one in the series. If you’re going to read them, I do recommend you read them in order.
I definitely give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
