Okay.
There.
I’ve said it.
I MIGHT be a crazy cat lady.
Maybe.
Or maybe, I’m just an old soul that cares about animals. Cats included.
My family might have a different opinion.
We have a large piece of property in the country, surrounded by farmland.
With farmland, comes stray cats.
Cats that live in barns and keep rodents away from farm crops.
Cats that wander and somehow always seem to end up on OUR property.
We don’t have a farm. Almost the exact opposite of a farm, as a matter of fact. Yet, cats seem to gravitate to our property.
Maybe it’s because our property is a certified Habitat for Wildlife. Surely the cats can’t read our Habitat for Wildlife sign we have posted, but they must just intrinsically know we care about animals.
Over the 13 years since we built our home here, we have rehomed almost three dozen cats into Forever Homes. And we are still working on rehoming another three dozen (or more). It seems to be a never-ending process.
Yes. We are having the outdoor cats spayed and neutered, and thankfully, we’ve recently discovered a Community Cats program that will help us spay and neuter the strays we find on our property, and let them live out their lives here after they have been “fixed”.
Unfortunately (or maybe – fortunately?), pregnant cats keep appearing here. They feel safe here and end up having their kittens in various shelters we have around our property. When we find them and their kittens, we’ve been moving them into a special “Cat Room” we’ve built in our walkout basement. We tend to them as if they were our pets – loving them, feeding them (bottle feeding when necessary) and providing them with plenty of love, attention, and play opportunities. They are friendly, loving, and fun. They DESERVE a Forever INDOOR Home!
I’ve been working with several rescue agencies to find foster homes for the kittens and their Mom’s until they can be adopted. I’ve also been working hard at finding homes for the kittens myself – among friends and family. I refuse to simply put a “Free Kittens” sign at the end of our driveway for just anyone to stop by and grab a kitten or two – you just never know the intention of strangers and I’d rather not take the chance.
Caring for all these cats and kittens takes an ENORMOUS amount of time! And, it’s expensive! But, we do it because we care.
I started a Go Fund Me Page awhile back, and was honored to have people who also care, help fund our efforts (you know who you are, and we love you for your contributions). Life has been extremely busy (and stressful) for me these past six months or so, so I haven’t kept up that Go Fund Me page like I’d like to. It’s still there at Kittens-Cats and I will update that page as soon as I can. In the meantime, here’s a photo of some of the babies we are caring for.
I never – in my wildest dreams – would have thought I would become a “Crazy Cat Lady”. But somehow that title has bestowed itself upon me, and – well…. here I am.
I have to cut this short. I have 6 baby kittens to feed, hold, and snuggle before they head to bed and need to make sure the outdoor cats and kittens are in their huts before the cold night arrives.
Do you have a passion for cats and kittens? Tell me what you love most about them, and let’s start a conversation!
