This week’s plant profile is the Philodendron ‘Monster Giganteum’…
There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about having plants inside your home. I love the look of plants tucked into the corners of a room, displayed on coffee tables and kitchen counters, and gracing bathroom vanities.
Plants help a room feel grounded.
I especially love unique plants. Plants that act as conversation starters, and not something you see everywhere you go.
I’m always on the look-out for unique plants, and with this new series on my blog, I’ll share my latest finds with you. Here’s the latest find…

Philodendron ‘Monster Giganteum’
Oh. My. This plant is amazing! Even as a young plant, the leaves are huge! I can’t wait to watch this plant grow and mature.
About the Plant
The Philodendron ‘Monster Giganteum’ is also know as the ‘Beast Philodendron’. This is definitely a collector’s plant!
This large plant has glossy, smooth heart-shaped green leaves that grow into more of a rippled leaf as the plant matures (as shown in the last photo below).
The leaves of the Monster Giganteum grow to as large as 5-feet long by 3-feet wide! This plant will need space as it grows. The plant also loves to climb, so provide a moss-pole or other support for it, if you’d like. This plant will grow without support for quite a while before it starts to climb.
This plant is easy-to-grow, and it grows fast! It prefers bright, indirect light, but can also tolerate shade. Keep it out of direct sunlight, as that can burn the leaves. It requires typical watering when the top of the soil is dry. The plant is also drought tolerant to less watering, but it does not like consistently wet soil, so make sure to let the soil dry between watering. Since this is a tropical plant, it does like a light misting at least once a week. Like all Philodendrons, this plant can be propagated in water, especially during the warm growing season. Just cut a stem above an existing leaf and place it in water. It will start to sprout roots in less than two weeks. The Monster Giganteum also produces plantlets. Once the plantlet is a couple months old, you can move it to it’s own pot and start another plant. As this plant matures, you’ll need to repot it to a larger floor pot, but know that it actually likes to be somewhat root-bound.
The Monster Giganteum is native to the tropics, such as the Caribbean Islands, the Netherlands Antilles Islands, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the Virgin Islands and South America.
This plant is toxic to pets if chewed on.
Why I Love It
I love Philodendrons in general, especially ones with huge leaves. This plant has gigantic leaves! The leaves have an interesting pattern and their shape will change as the plant matures.
I love the form of this plant, as well. It looks awesome among other smaller plants that I have. It definitely commands attention!
Where to Buy
You can purchase this plant online from Hirt’s Gardens on Etsy for $19.99 in a 6″ pot (on sale right now – normally $50.00)
