This week’s plant profile is the Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’…
There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about having plants inside your home. I love the look of plants tucked into the corners of a room, displayed on coffee tables and kitchen counters, and gracing bathroom vanities.
Plants help a room feel grounded.
I especially love unique plants. Plants that act as conversation starters, and not something you see everywhere you go.
I’m always on the look-out for unique plants, and with this new series on my blog, I’ll share my latest finds with you. Here’s the latest find…

Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ (Hindu Rope Plant)
This Hoya is such a unique and textural plant! The leaves are twisted, folded, and contorted in the most interesting way. This plant is definitely one that draws attention!
About the Plant
The Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ (also known as a Hindu Rope Plant) is a very unique plant. It can be found in solid green or with green, white, and tints of pink variegated leaves (the Hoya carnosa compacta Variegata).
The leaves are very thick and are twisted, curled, and folded. The leaves grow along winding stems, making the plant look similar to a rope.
This plant (as well as the variegated variety) produces star-shaped waxy flowers.
LIGHT
The Hoya carnosa compacta prefers very bright indirect light, a south-facing window is best. If this plant is grown in low light conditions, it is unlikely to flower. Direct sun is not recommended, as this will burn the leaves.
WATER AND SOIL
This plant, like all Hoya’s, is a semi-succulent that needs very little water. Only water when the soil is almost completely dry, and make sure the plant is potted in a very well-draining, light soil. Water slightly more during the warm, growing months – and less during the cooler, winter months. Placing this plant in a small pot will help avoid over-watering.
GROWTH AND HUMIDITY
The Hoya carnosa compacta is a slow-growing plant, and it likes to be pot-bound. It can reach lengths of 15-inches long at maturity. It can take several years in proper conditions before this plant flowers. This plant does not require high humidity – just your basic household humidity is fine. Typical household temperatures work well for this plant.
NATIVE HABITAT
This plant is native to India.
TOXICITY
The Hoya carnosa compacta is a non-toxic plant, although it can make pets sick if they ingest a large amount of leaves.
PROPAGATION
This plant is easy to propagate. Cut a stem off the tip of the plant, making sure to include one or more pair of leaves. Place the cutting in water or damp sand to propagate.
Why I Love It
Plants that are unusual and visually interesting are my most favorite types. This plant definitely fits that category! I love the shape of the leaves and the look of the overall plant. These are seriously some of the coolest leaves. When this plant is displayed next to other more typical houseplants, it adds texture and flair to the display.
Where to Buy
You can purchase this plant at Groovy Plant Ranch on Etsy for $32 in a 6-inch pot.
