This week’s plant choice is the Aeonium tabuliforme “Dinner Plate Aeonium” Plant…
There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about having plants inside your home. I love the look of plants tucked into the corners of a room, displayed on coffee tables and kitchen counters, and gracing bathroom vanities.
Plants help a room feel grounded.
I especially love unique plants. Plants that act as conversation starters, and not something you see everywhere you go.
I’m always on the look-out for unique plants, and with this new series on my blog, I’ll share my latest finds with you. Here’s the latest find…

Aeonium tabuliforme “Dinner Plate Aeonium”
This dinner plate succulent is so unique! I was given this plant as a gift by my son’s girlfriend – she knows how much I enjoy unusual plants. This succulent is one of my favorites, for many reasons.
About the Plant
The Dinner Plate succulent is typically a very flat plant that is comprised of overlapping leaves in a swirled rosette pattern. The plant can get up to 18″ in diameter. The leaves have fine “hair” on the edges, giving them a unique look. Some plants are more dome-shaped in the center (like mine).
This plant has small starry yellow flowers that appear in the Summer. These flowers emerge from the center of the plant and grow on a stem that can reach 24″ tall. Before the flowers appear, the plant may start to rise in the center, making it more of a dome-shape than a flat dinner plate shape. One of the sad things about this plant (and Aeoniums in general) is that it is monocarpic – meaning they die after flowering. You can start a new plant from the seeds of the flowers.
The Dinner Plate succulent is native to the Canary Islands.
Unlike many other succulents that thrive in warm weather, this plant prefers cooler temperatures. If the plant is kept where it’s too warm, the leaves curl. This plant does not like to be too hot and it doesn’t like to dry out. Make sure to water when the soil is dry, and be careful not to overwater. This is a very easy to grow plant, and they actually seem to thrive on neglect.
The best lighting for this plant is bright indirect light to partial shade.
This plant has a lifespan of about 3 years.
Why I Love It
Well, of course I love this plant because it was a gift, and that means a lot to me. But I also love it because it’s unique. I love the “shingled” leaves and their feathery edges. The pattern and swirls of this plant also make it a winner.
Where to Buy
You can purchase this plant online from SucculentCreationz on Etsy for $12.55 plus shipping in a 4″ pot.
