Host a Holiday Activity Challenge for Your Family or Friends – Here’s How

To make the month of December even MORE fun for my family, I created a family Holiday Challenge.

The goal of this activity is to get everyone out of the house – to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the holiday season. And of course, to have FUN!

So far, my family is having a blast with this idea (they’re very competitive), and I am treasuring all the photos they are taking and sharing.

I thought you might like the idea, and want to try it with your family, too. Here’s how…

Host a Holiday Activity Challenge

Here’s the information you’ll need for this fun activity.

What You Will Need

  • Holiday Activity Card (click to download and print)
  • Prizes (choose gifts to use for 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and a Consolation Prize)
  • A fun holiday spirit!

What You Do

  1. Print one copy of the Holiday Activity Card for each team.
  2. Decide where and how each team should post their activity photos. For example, we have a private Facebook Group for our family, and we are all posting our completed activity photos there (see details below).
  3. Share the rules and details of the holiday challenge with your family. See the paragraph below for the text I posted to our family.
  4. Once the holiday challenge is over, determine the winners for 1st Place, 2nd Place, etc. and award prizes. Make sure to take photos or videos of your prize ceremony!

Details and Rules to Share with Family

Here’s the text I posted to our family Facebook Group regarding this challenge. Change the details as needed to better fit your family.

Mahs Family Fun Holiday Challenge!

Let’s have fun, and enjoy the holiday all month long.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

  • Complete the activities in the boxes below. Cross off as many holiday activities as possible throughout the month of December.
  • Take a picture – or a selfie of your team – of the completed activity, and post in a comment below. (Selfie shots of your team and the activity are more fun).
NOTE: Make sure to include the activity number (or description) along with your photos.
  • The team to cross off all boxes*, wins the 1st Place Gift; the second team wins the 2nd Place Gift; the third team, the 3rd Place Gift; the last team, the Consolation Gift.
*If all boxes are not crossed off, the team who crosses off the most, wins 1st place.
*If more than one team crosses off the same number of boxes resulting in a tie, a coin flip will determine who wins the tie for 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, etc.
  • Have a festive time!
TIPS:
  • Form teams of two.
  • Complete the activities in any order.
  • Print the Holiday Challenge card so you can keep track of which activities you’ve done. Here’s a link – https://cdn.shopify.com/…/Mahs_Family_Fun_Holiday…
  • If teams want to go out on an activity together, you can – take separate photos of each team, or take photos of everyone all together.
  • This is not a race. You have until the end of December to complete your activity card.
GOAL OF THIS ACTIVITY:
  • The main goal of this activity is to get everyone out of the house, to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the holiday season. And of course, to have FUN!

Additional Tips

  • Create a Facebook Group – As mentioned above, I created a private Facebook Group for our family (our boys and their girlfriends) where I post ideas for ‘family fun days’ and for events we’re having/hosting as a family. Since we’re not often all together at the same time, this Facebook Group seems to be a great way to stay in contact to discuss family fun day ideas. It’s been a great place for everyone to post their photos of completed activities. If you’re not sure how to create a Facebook Group, click ‘How Do I Create a Facebook Group‘ for details (it’s really easy).
  • Ideas for Prizes – If you’d like, plan a prize so each team wins something – with the 1st Place prize being the best prize. The prizes can be anything – from inexpensive and simple, to something grand – you decide what’s best for you.
For example: Prizes for 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and a Consolation Prize could be gift certificates to local restaurants in various denominations.
TIP: Keep the prizes a secret until the end to make it more of a surprise.
  • Go Solo – If you prefer, you could have each family member perform these activities by themselves, versus forming teams. This would allow family members who don’t live near each other to still be able to participate in the holiday challenge.

If you have suggestions for additional activities, I’d certainly love to hear them!
