Because of the nature of my job, I spend a lot of time online. As a result, I come across some pretty cool websites, and I’d like to share these treasured finds with you.
In this new blog series, Favorite Websites, I’ll post my favorite sites with you, and will give you tips on how you can use these websites. I hope you enjoy!
Favorite Website: CBS Radio Mystery Theater
I have loved the CBS Radio Mystery Theater programs since I was a young girl. My Dad knew how much I loved scary books and movies, so he introduced me to Radio Mystery Theater. I couldn’t wait for bedtime to roll around, knowing that a new program would start at 9pm on my radio. I would lay in bed with my eyes closed and enjoy a new episode each evening. Listening to the radio with your eyes closed made the stories seem to come to life, and allowed you to use your imagination regarding what the characters and setting looked like. Sometimes the stories scared me and sometimes they made me laugh. They always entertained and intrigued me! I especially loved the opening to each episode – the creaking door, the ominous music, and E.G. Marshall’s voice announcing the upcoming program.
To this day, my husband, sons, and I still listen to Radio Mystery Theater – especially when we take long drives or are on our way to and from our lake cabin. Listening to these stories makes the time fly by, and they bring back so many great memories from when I was a kid. We even love listening to the commercials that were played during these programs – nothing like a 1970s commercial to make you smile!
If you missed the Radio Mystery Theater programs back in the 1970s and early 1980s, you’re in luck! There’s a website that includes all 1,399 episodes that you can listen to – FREE!
CBS Radio Mystery Theater – https://www.cbsrmt.com/
This website includes an Episode Guide that lists all the episodes of Radio Mystery Theater, as well as a synopsis of each program. The episodes are broken down by year (1974 through 1982). There is also an index of all the actors that appeared in the programs, along with an index of all the writers.
Use This Website:
To use this website, find an episode you’d like to listen to from the guide, and press Play. Here’s how.

All episodes are listed in order by date. You can either start listening from the beginning, or you can choose a specific program.
- Click on the episode Title to read more about that episode and to launch the player
For example, click on The Old Ones Are Hard to Kill and the following screen will appear.

Make sure your speakers are turned up.
Additional Tips and Notes:
- My family and I like to listen to these programs on our way to the cabin and back. In our vehicle, we just go to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater website on one of our smartphones and then we use a Bluetooth speaker so everyone in the vehicle can easily hear the program.
- If you don’t want to stream the episodes to listen to them, all episodes are also available to be downloaded in MP3 format. Just click on the Download this Episode button at the bottom of the episode page, then choose the folder on your computer that you want to download the program to. Once you download an episode, you can listen to it at any time from the file saved on your computer.
- Interesting Note: Each episode is around 45-minutes long. There are 1,399 total episodes (or approximately 1,050 hours of total playtime). It would take you 43 days of continual listening to hear each episode! That’s a lot of free entertainment!
