Did you know that March is National Craft Month?! Yay!
I am determined to do at least one craft a day throughout the month of March. I love creating and trying new things, so this is going to be a really FUN month!

Painted Tea Towels
Today I’m painting tea towels for our kitchen. I LOVE making custom tea towels!
Years ago I bought a huge bin of vintage embroidery hoops for my vintage shop. They have SO many uses beyond embroidery – for example, they work great to stretch tea towels to make painting easier. I’m making a couple of tea towels for our Monthly Cocktail Club get-together next week for St. Patrick’s Day. This is so much fun!
What You Will Need:
- Large Embroidery Hoop
- White Tea Towels
- Assorted Fabric Paint
- Assorted Fabric Paint Pens
- Pencil or Water Soluble Pencil
What You Do:
- Place the portion of your tea towel that you want to paint into an embroidery loop
Make sure to tighten the loop in order to hold the cloth securely. It’s a good idea to pull the fabric all the way around to make it as tight as possible. Tighten the loop if needed. - Use a pencil to draw out your design or pattern right on your tea towel
You can also freehand paint your towel – whichever method you’re more comfortable with. - Use either a paintbrush and fabric paints or fabric paint pens to apply color to your tea towels
You can reposition your tea towel within the embroidery hoop if needed, so that you can paint other areas of the towel. - When all your painting is done, I recommend ironing your tea towel on a low to medium setting
- Allow the paint on your tea towel to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before using the towel or before washing it
Because the paints are made for fabric, they will air dry and will not wash out.
Additional Tips:
- Paint Anything – Even if you think you can’t draw (or paint) – give this craft a try. Anything can be called “abstract art” and look good!
- Experiment with Paint and Paint Pens – Combining paint that is brushed on with your paint pens can create some very interesting designs. For example, I like to paint large areas with a paint brush and paint, then go back later and outline objects with paint pens. Paint pens also work very well for lettering. Try both methods, and have fun!

I hope you enjoyed this project! Make sure to check back tomorrow to see what I’ll be working on.
