Homemade Limoncello

Okay. So this isn’t your typical “arts and crafts” project. BUT… I do think it’s an art to craft a great-tasting batch of Limoncello!

I started steeping the lemon peels in vodka back on January 29, 2023. We’re going to be getting another major snowstorm tomorrow, so I figured today was a great day to bring a little ‘sunshine’ to the week. ☀️

I tasted a tiny sample of Limoncello straight out of the jar, and yowza! It was good even like that. Instead of adding a simple syrup to the infused vodka, I made a semi-rich simple syrup. I figured I could always dilute if necessary. And guess what?! It tastes great! All 8-cups of Limoncello!

Now I just need some friends over to help me enjoy it! Cheers!

What You Will Need:

What You Do:

  1. Wash your lemons thoroughly, then use a peeler to remove just the outer yellow skin – getting as little pith as possible
  2. Place the lemon peels into a 1-quart size mason jar and cover with vodka
  3. Screw on the lid, then place the jar in a cool dark place to steep
  4. Let the lemon peels steep (infuse) for a least 4 days or as long as month
The longer you let the vodka infuse, the more flavorful and lemony your Limoncello will be.
  5. After your lemon peels are done steeping, it’s time to finish your batch of Limoncello – YAY!
  6. Place a strainer over a 4-cup bowl or measuring cup, then strain the lemon peel infusion into this bowl
  7. Make a batch of semi-rich simple syrup  by adding 1 cup of water and 2 cups of granulated sugar to a saucepan, allow it to simmer until the sugar is dissolved
  8. Allow the sugar to cool, then add to the lemon vodka mix and stir until well mixed
TIP: You can add more semi-rich simple syrup if desired – it’s all up to your taste.
  9. Use a funnel to bottle your Limoncello in your favorite bottles – allow Limoncello to cool for at least several hours before serving
TIP: Limoncello can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a month, or you can put it in the freezer for up to a year or longer.

Additional Tips:

  • Use as Gifts – Bottle Limoncello in small flip-top bottles and gift them to your family, friends, and neighbors on the first day of Spring or the first day of Summer. It’s a fun way to share something bright and cheerful at the change of the seasons.

I hope you enjoyed this project! Make sure to check back tomorrow to see what I’ll be working on.
