Did you know that March is National Craft Month?! Yay!
I am determined to do at least one craft a day throughout the month of March. I love creating and trying new things, so this is going to be a really FUN month!
Today I’m making colorful coasters for our cabin.

Sharpie Alcohol Ink Coasters
I’ve been working on plans for remodeling our lake cabin. I wanted to bring pops of color to our deck and gazebo, so decided to make colorful coasters for our beverages. Because each coaster is unique, everyone will choose their favorite design and will remember which drink is theirs.
Custom coasters like these are fun to use at home for everyday use, or to save for parties. They make fun gifts, too! And… once you start making them, you’ll want to make a dozen!
What You Will Need:
- 4″ x 4″ White Ceramic Tile (available at home improvement stores)
- Sharpie Markers
- 91% Isopropyl Alcohol (70% does not work as well)
- Craft Mat or Cardboard (to protect your work surface)
- Small Spray Bottle or Pipette
- Seal Coat Spray Paint (I recommend Krylon UV Resistant Clear Acrylic Coating)
- Small Rubber Feet
What You Do:
- Make sure your ceramic tile is clean and dry
- Use Sharpie markers to create colorful patterns on your tile – be creative!
- When your tile is covered with ink, spray your tile LIGHTLY with alcohol and watch the colors blend and shift
TIP: Don’t spray too much alcohol on the tile. Start with a little bit all over, then spray more as needed. The more alcohol you use, the lighter (more pastel) the colors will be.
NOTE: If using a pipette instead of a spray bottle, drop about a pea size amount of alcohol on your tile to start with, then add more drops as needed. - Allow your tile to dry completely (this will take about 15-30 minutes, depending on the temperature of the room)
TIP: If you’re not happy with your design, add more Sharpie colors to your tile, and then spray with alcohol again. Keep repeating this until you get the results you’re looking for. - When your tile is completely dry, spray a seal coat paint on top to ensure the ink will last
- Place small rubber feet on the bottom four corners of your coaster to help protect your table or other surfaces from scratches
Additional Tips:
- Embellish With Black Markers – Once your tile is completely dry (and before you seal coat it), use black Sharpie markers to embellish your designs. For example, create doodles over the paint; hand letter words of encouragement; or create Zentangles. Let your imagination run wild!
- Use Coasters for Everyday Use or for Parties – When you have a collection of painted coasters, you can use them for parties or for everyday use. They’re fun to use on a patio or at backyard BBQs – each guest will know which beverage is theirs by their unique coaster.
