Black houseplants add style and sophistication to any decor. They look especially stunning when paired with green plants.
Black plants can be slightly harder to find than your typical green houseplants – but no worries! I’ve put this list together for you of my favorite black plants. Enjoy!

Raven ZZ (Zamioculcas zamiifolia “Raven”)
This rare Raven ZZ plant is one of my most favorite black houseplants. New leaves start out green, but they quickly change to black and are absolutely stunning.
ZZ plants can survive in very low light conditions, but grow best in well-lit locations away from direct sunlight. You’ll want to make sure to let the soil dry out completely before watering again. This plant has a tuber-like rhizome that stores water, so if you over-water the plant, it can cause root rot.
I bought my ZZ Raven Plant online at Amazon for $28.99 – a 12-inch tall plant in a white ceramic planter.
Aeonium “Black rose” (Aeonium Arboreum Zwartkopf)
The Black Rose succulent is really a very striking plant. The rosette clumps are a very dark purple, almost black leaves.
This plant grows up to 3-feet tall and has long stems that lead up to the large black rosettes. The rosettes can get up to 8-inches in diameter. In the Summer, yellow star-shaped flowers appear in clusters in the center of the rosettes.
The Black Rose requires thorough watering once a week, allowing the pot to drain completely. Water less during cold weather.
I bought my Black Rose at Amazon for $12.99 in a 3-inch pot.
Chinese Jade (Sinocrassula yunnanensis)
I love this black succulent – it has so much character!
This plant is a rather small succulent. The rosettes grow up to about 4-inches tall and are about 1-1/2-inches diameter.
The Chinese Jade are very easy to grow. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, and never over water.
I bought my Chinese Jade on Etsy from JSTSucculents for $32.85 in a 2-inch pot.
Black Elephant Ear (Alocasia amazonica “Polly”)
This is seriously one incredible plant! It’s one of my favorites.
The Alocasia Polly has very dark green, almost black leaves that are very narrow with wavy edges. Each leaf is about 2-feet long and has ribs in a creamy white color. It is such a beautiful plant!
This plant grows up to 3-feet tall and 2-feet wide. It likes part shade or indirect light. It prefers a moist soil and thrives in high humidity – perfect for a bathroom.
I bought my Black Elephant Ear at American Plants for $24.99 in a 4-inch pot.
Black Hen and Chicks (Echeveria “Black prince”)
The Black Prince is a beautiful succulent and looks spectacular in any room. Combine it in a bowl with other green succulents for a stunning look.
This plant has deep brown leaves that are almost black. It grows up to 6-inches tall and around 8-inches wide. The Black Prince produces offsets (chicks) that start out green, but darken over time.
I bought my Black Prince at SolSucculents1 for $12.50 in a 4-inch pot.
Black Mondo Decorative Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus “Nigrescens”)
While you usually see this ornamental grass grown outdoors as a border grass, it also makes an awesome houseplant.
This black grass needs evenly moist soil and indirect to full sun to thrive. Plant the grass in the center of a planter and add bright green moss around the border – it makes an amazing display of contrasting colors.
I bought my Black Mondo Grass at Amazon for $17.95 in a 3-inch pot.
Black Magic Elephant Ear (Colocasia Eculenta “Black Magic” Taro)
The Black Magic Elephant Ear has large very dark purple, almost black leaves that have a sort of velvet feel to them. The leaves can get up to 2-feet long. The leaves droop from the stems so it’s very easy to see the leaves.
This plant likes indirect sun and moist to wet soil. You’ll want to water frequently and provide regular fertilization.
When new leaves sprout, they are a light green. Within days, they turn black and are so beautiful.
I bought my Black Magic Coral Elephant Ear on Etsy from PlantWorld for $24.95 in a 3-inch pot.
Black Ripple Elephant Ear (Colocasia “Black Ripple”)
The Black Ripple Elephant Ear is very similar to the Black Magic shown above. The difference with this plant is that it has rippled, sort of puckered, leaves that have a bold, reflective sheen to them. The undersides of the leaves are a very dark-maroon color and the stems are near-black.
I bought my Black Ripple Elephant Ear at WellspringGardens for $15.00 in a 4-inch pot.
Black Cardinal Philodendron
The Black Cardinal has the most beautiful glossy blackish green leaves. This plant is a clumping plant, it doesn’t climb or sprawl like a typical philodendron does.
When the leaves first appear they are a light orange color. As they mature, they turn a deep dark almost-black color.
This is such an easy to grow plant! It’s a fast grower and tolerates a wide range of conditions. The Black Cardinal does best in well-drained, moist soil in bright, indirect light. If this plant is in too much light, the leaves will become more pale.
I bought my Black Cardinal on Etsy from TheFlowerPotNursery for $8.99 in a 4-inch pot.
Burgundy Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)
This Rubber Tree plant is really gorgeous. The leaves are a dark, deep burgundy that almost looks black.
The Rubber Tree grows best in bright, indirect light. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, then thoroughly drench until the water drains out of the pot. Make sure not to splash water onto the leaves, or it will cause water stains.
This plant can grow to 8-feet tall, but can be pruned to keep it the height you prefer.
I bought my Rubber Plant at AmericanPlants for $35.00 in a 6-inch pot.
